Hello [Jul. 29th, 2007|06:13 pm]
Students Parenting

Hey Everyone! I have a question. I am having a lot of difficulty finding schools to transfer to that have on campus housing and with local transportation. So I thought I'd ask if anyone her is going to a great 4 year college that they enjoy and the schools offers family housing. Or if you know of any schools, please let me know I would greatly appreciate it! I am an online student right now and I just can't take it any longer! I need to socialize again!

Shameless Promotion [Jul. 12th, 2007|08:43 am]
Students Parenting

I'm advertising a new community that we're trying to get off the ground.

Its main focus is toward past and present young parents, especially moms.

When I got pregnant with my son, I didn't know anyone who'd been there and done that- all the moms I knew were older and a lot more stable. It would have been good to have someone I knew who'd been through it already.

So- we've created adopt_youngmoms for that purpose- to connect new young parents (not just moms!) with experienced young parents.

Hope you all are doing well and enjoying the summer!

Newbie [Apr. 28th, 2007|07:01 pm]
Students Parenting

I'm an 18yr old lady from Adelaide down in South Australia. Me and my partner (21) have just decided to start trying to make our family :)
I'm 1/3 of the way through my final year of high school (second attempt, part time study), and my partner is in his first year of a bachelor of psychological sciences (might as well be part time, he's rarely actually there).
Just thought I'd pop in and say hello, introduce myself and my situation and all that jazz. I'm not sure if I'm really in the right group, since we're ttc, rather than it being unexpected and us already being parents, but I think you guys will be able to give me a lot of helpful hints for my partner. Oh yeah, when baby actually comes I will have finished tihs year of study and plan to be a full time mother for at least the first year of baby's life.

sorry if this was a bit choppy. I'm not feeling 100% and I think I need a nap. Thanks for reading anyway :)

I'd really like to see more activity in this community. I've been thinking about opening up a few contests or discusions. I really want to get other people's opinions though.

Are you happy with how things are?
What would you like to see changed?
Any other suggestions?

Tuesday [Jan. 13th, 2007|08:41 pm]
Students Parenting

Ah, school. Yesterday, I went with my mom to pick up my books and all that jazz. Although it turned out to be a mostly wasted trip. I had only 1 book at the textbook rental place, and the book store was only starting the PELL grant line after school started, so I couldn't get my books from there yet. It sucks that they are doing it like that because after school starts the lines are a mile long and the store is super crowded. All that, and you have to go sometime around your class schedule. Blah. Whatever.

School starts on Tuesday. I'm having a lot of anxiety about it. I want to go back, yet I don't. I am really excited to be teaching this semester. I love students, and I love the career choice I have made. But in the same instance, I don't want to miss my little daughter's growth and milestones, and I want her to love me as her mommy and not as her babysitter. But, I guess, as long as she is surrounded by people who love her, she can't get too messed up. I'm so gratefull that she can stay with her grandmas and not have to go to daycare. Actually as for now, she will be staying with her daddy because we are working opposite shifts. That's good for Amory, but horrible for Brandon and I. We are never going to see eachother. Sometimes life just doesn't turn out like you'd want it to.

I have class Monday-Thursday 9-2. And Friday from 9-11. But then I'll have to do some outside of school hours with students so that will fill up the rest of the day on Fridays.

Separation Anxiety [Jan. 3rd, 2007|11:38 pm]
Students Parenting

I don't really know what's wrong with me. I've been feeling kind of down in the dumps lately. I've been worried about a lot of things, like money, going back to school, and having to stay at my jobs. It all majorly sucks.

I know school is three weeks away, but I know they will just fly by, and I will be separated from my baby again. I've been feeling these overwelming emotions like I want to stay with her all the time. Instead of putting her in her bed at night or during some naps I take into my bed and snuggle her until she falls asleep and sometimes I fall asleep myself. Then I put her back in her bed when Brandon comes home from work. I've not been doing anything around the house or anything. I don't think this kind of thing is healthy. Not to mention that if I stick to Amory like glue, we will both have an incredibly hard time separating when the time comes. I'm getting all teary eyed just thinking about it.

Ebay or Amazon? [Dec. 18th, 2006|12:44 pm]
Students Parenting

I have decided to sell my old textbooks. Up untilthis emester I just kept them, and then if someone took the same course I woul loan them the book. However we're moving next summer and I don't want to tote them across the country with us.
I played with the idea of selling them back to the University, but they only give you 10
% of cover price, then sell the used books for roughly 75% of the cover price.
I decided I would rather sell the books to someone who needed them, that way they could get affordable books, and I could put more money into my textbook fund.
So then the question arises" Ebay or Amazon?

Has anyone ever sold textbooks online?

Fall 2006 Reflections [Dec. 15th, 2006|01:15 pm]
Students Parenting

[Current Mood |creativecreative]

I am officially done for the semester (WHOOP!)!

I took 5 classes this semester and I know for sure that I have two A's and one B.

Felix bought me a laptop in October, because our desktop died, and it's kind of hard to write papers without a computer. I'm sure I could have used my old typewriter, but I can't seem to find new ink ribbons for it. Anyway somehow I keep getting the caps turned permanetely on and it's driving me crazy. I have no idea how I'm dong it.

Today is perfectly placed. My last final was yesterday and today is Felix's 23 birthday. So we're going to celebrate.

I haven't registered for classes yet. I'm at a cross roads again. We're moving to Idaho in July, the university that will be in our new town has an incredible dietics program, which I would love to join. However we'll only be there for a year. So right now I'm trying to decide whether I should stay with my community health major or change to nutrition so I can try to get into the other dietics program.

This semester was my first time back as a full-time student since Marcus was born. It was also the first time I really felt that the university I attend had let me down. I ended up with two instructors who were not student-friendly. It was impossible to get a hold of them the entire semester. One lost two of my assignments and whenever I emailed her about it she docked points. She also ended up canceling 1/2 of our class times. At first I thought it was kind of cool to only have class once a week, then I realized what a disadvantage it put us at.
My other instructor is retiring next semester, his lectures were considered long if they went over 20 minutes, and he got a lot of his sources from wikipedia.
Up until now I have had amazing instrutors! I guess having two lousy ones in the same semester made up for it.

How did everyone else's semester go?

My IQ [Dec. 14th, 2006|09:52 pm]
Students Parenting

Yea, I took an online IQ test. I did by accident really. It was one of the those advertisement thingies for tickle something or other. Anyways, it was really annoying having to say no to all those product adversizements, but here are my results. I guess it's pretty accurate because I always get between a 125 and 130 on all the IQ tests I've ever taken.

Congratulations, Jessica!
Your IQ score is 129

This number is based on a scientific formula that compares how many questions you answered correctly on the Classic IQ Test relative to others.

Your Intellectual Type is Insightful Linguist. This means you are highly intelligent and have the natural fluency of a writer and the visual and spatial strengths of an artist. Those skills contribute to your creative and expressive mind. And that's just some of what we know about you from your test results.

It's funny that they say I have fluency as a writer because I didn't write anything, and anyone reading this can tell that I am not grammatically inclined. Oh well.

Grades [Dec. 13th, 2006|09:48 pm]
Students Parenting

I don't know how I pulled it off, but I did it. I made all A's this semester. I'm truely shocked that I got an A in ceramics and testing. My ceramics teacher told us in the beginning of the semester that he doesn't give A's unless you really deserve it. I quess I just managed to scrap by. I totally bombed the midterm in my testing class becuase I just didn't have time to study for it. I'm sure you all know how that goes.

The classes I took were:
Basic Ceremics
Testing and Lesson Planning
Art Education in the Secondary School
Communication in the Classroom

Next Semester I take:
Teaching Methods in the Secondary School (6 hours)
Senior Project Printmaking
Tch Read Content Area (whatever that means)

I'm doing my senior show next semester before I do student teaching even though I'm not graduating until the fall. It's pretty nice that they let education majors do that. I'm going to do my show on motherhood in the 21st century. It's inspired by Mary Cassatt. Their going to be prints though because that's my concentration area.

Think this only updated looking:

Ew! Shots! [Dec. 12th, 2006|07:58 pm]
Students Parenting

My poor sweet angel went to get shots today. I think she went into some kind of spasm or something because she was shaking all over. It was soo horifying. I feel so bad. I hate to get shots myself. She was so worked up that I just let her sleep through her 6PM feeding. She can make it up in the morning. (Hopefully not too early)

Her new measurements are:
Age: 6 months and 9 days
Weight: 15 3/4 lbs (50th percentile)
Height: 26 1/4 in (75th percentile)

She's long and lean. She's in the 25th percentile for height and weight ratio. That's really weird for a couple of reasons. One, she is bottle fed. Two, both her parents are average height and a little chubby. But Brandon's birth mother (he is adopted) was a petit girl, so maybe she got some of those genes.

She got a flu shot too, and needs a booster next month. Then she doesn't need another shot until 9 months. Gee wiz, why do babies get so many shots. How did babies in the olden days fend off disease? Maybe that's one of the reasons people had 12+ children back then.

And now for today's picturesCollapse )

Hello. [Dec. 9th, 2006|01:26 pm]
Students Parenting

Hello. My name is Jessica and I am 21 and the proud mother of a six month old girl named Amory. I have been married for 2 1/2 years to a wonderful man who consequently has also been in school. Actually he graduated and just got finished with his first semester of grad school.

I am so happy that school is finally over. I am an art education major with 2 semesters left!!!! Actually I'm hoping to get an internship with an elementary or middle school in the fall instead of taking student teaching. I think I'm ready for that leap. I know I would make an awesome teacher.

I had been working 2 jobs, going to school, and taking care of my daughter. But fortunately my husband is dropping out of grad school and I am quitting my jobs and focusing on school and my family. Yay!!!

I have joined this group now I guess because now that school is out, I have some extra time to kill.

*sigh* im in effin tears over school.

I wont get accepted this year into the nursing program, end of story, i wont have a high enough GPA... that pushes me back to a grad date of 2010. Thats if I get accepted next year, which I doubt, because it seems that no matter how hard I try, in my science classes I can just srape by with a C. Cs dont make for 3.0 or better GPAs and out of the 500 students that apply only 100 get accepted each fall.

If I go to Del Mar I only need a 2.5 GPA. I have a 2.61.... If I get all those classes that I dont have, out of the way and end up getting accepted into the DelMar program I will have a graduation date of 2009. Looking at the DelMar class sheet makes me ill... I could have done that and been done with it by 2008. Thats ONE YEAR! but no, I thought I would have a go for my BSN... which requires things like history, and math and stuff like that.

What kind of person takes 4 years to get a 2 year degree? Argh. I dont know what I am going to do... I have a meeting with the DelMar lady monday at 11:30 to talk about options and such.

Why didnt I go for this in the first place? Ive wasted 2 whole years on classes that I dont need for this program. I guess though, when I go back for my BSN later down the road those classes will still be there... heh.

Hey everyone!

I hope everyone's classes are going good! This is the second week of classes for me and everything seems to be going good. I am taking Biology with Lab, Political Science, History 2, and Ethics... i thinks thats it, haha. I think the only one that is going to give me a lot of trouble is Biology :P Though I may be wrong, but were starting in the chemistry area of it, and I never was good at that, I was lucky to scrape a C. However I am looking for As and Bs this semester! I know I can do it!

How is everyone elses school situation?
